who we are
Reverend Cary Stockett
Cary Stockett is a Jackson native (b. 1962), but grew up near Crystal Springs on his family’s farm. “Some of the most formative experiences of my life—not to mention my fondest memories—are all about growing up out in the country.” Brought up in a grace-filled Christian home, Cary was nurtured and supported by a strong church family at Crystal Springs United Methodist Church. His interests and pastimes are varied. An avid reader, Cary favors history, biography, theology, and fiction (especially Sherlock Holmes!). Hunting, fishing, and walking the woods are also among his hobbies, along with playing the guitar, which he says, “helps work the knots out of my soul.” He likes listening to all kinds of music, and enjoys creative writing.
A graduate of Mississippi College and Asbury Theological Seminary, Cary is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church. In the twenty-three years of his pastoral ministry, he has served Mississippi churches of all sizes:
- Main Street UMC, Hattiesburg
(associate pastor, 1987-1991)
- Spring Ridge UMC, Terry (1991-1998)
- Carthage UMC,Carthage (1998-2005, along with
Conway & Walnut Grove UMC’s)
- Christ UMC, Jackson (senior pastor, 2005-2009)
Cary met Mechelle during his seminary years, and they were married a year later, in 1987. They have two very active sons, Andrew (20) and Elliot (16).
