By now most of our church family has heard of my announcement Sunday morning (Mar. 5), that Mechelle and I will be leaving Crawford Street after eight wonderful years. This has been a difficult and painful choice for us, because we have felt so deeply loved and fulfilled here.
It was very important to me that our congregation hear this news from me, and that you understand something of my journey as I have made this decision. I labored over my message Sunday, to convey my feelings as fully as possible. For that reason, if you were not in church Sunday morning, March 5th, you would do me a great favor (and perhaps yourself as well) if you would listen online to the recording of my message, on the Crawford Street website (http://www.crawfordstreetumc.org/#/next-steps then scroll down to the button “Launch Sermon Player.”)
On June 27, which is moving day across Mississippi for UM pastors being reassigned, Crawford Street will receive the Rev. Dr. Tom Atkins as your new shepherd and senior pastor. That same day, I will become the new senior pastor at Galloway Memorial United Methodist Church in Jackson.
As you can see, this transition is almost four months away, so you and I will work together to celebrate our relationships, and also help prepare a warm and receptive welcome for Tom and the gifts he will bring to CSUMC. We will also be assisted in this by the good work of our Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC).
In the meantime, let’s covenant together to bathe this whole transition in prayer. We all desire that the Spirit will be at work in every way to make growing disciples and establish the work of Christ in our communities.
Please pray in particular: for our church here at Crawford Street… for our SPRC as it helps lead us… for Tom Atkins as your new incoming pastor… for 1st UMC Brookhaven, where Tom has been serving… for Mechelle and me as we embrace this change… and for Galloway, where I will be going.
In the sure and certain hope of Christ the Lord, Cary
